Abbot’s Hill School Junior Science Landscape
NVB were appointed to develop a 5 year masterplan for the school, the Junior Redevelopment being second phase. This project created a number of facilities for the school, including classrooms that replaced temporary classrooms connecting two buildings down a sloping site. The new building created the third side to a open space that is surrounded by classrooms. These adjacencies set the brief for the courtyard to be a outdoor classroom for the study of science. These functions make use of the sloping site and are integrated in the sustainable drainage system (SUDS). The layout of the building and movement patterns around the school created a key path which bisects the courtyard, climbing up the space offering access and views to the key outdoor learning spaces. These include plants and habitats designed to suit the school’s curriculum.
